In today’s lecture, we further delved into the topic of the fundamentals of design, Line, Plane and Point. We were also told about the Golden ratio and how it pertains to design work. As well as touching on the golden ratio and Gestalt’s principle.

Line:

First, covered Line, another fundamental element of design. Lines can be used to show motion or movement, to showcase data, or as a stylistic choice, as used in Bauhaus or modern artwork

It also features heavily in branding, such as in Adidas’s or HP’s logos

I particularly enjoyed the look of the Spotify logo, as it’s well-known to most people, and it has stayed fairly the same since the brand’s launch in 2008.

They have modernised it, changed it to fit current standards of clean, minimalistic logos, but the line design has stuck through all the changes.

Planes:

Planes are the 3rd fundamental element of design. I feel like a great example of prominent plane use in design is the cubism and some futurism movements.

These movements both feature plane and line design elements heavily, especially cubism.

I particularly enjoyed Fernand Léger’s work for “La Fin du monde, filmée par l'ange ” by Blaise Cendrars.

It just feels so engaging to look at and feels clear even with a multi-coloured palette.

However, Planes are also present in more corporate forms of design, for example, Barack Obama’s presidential campaign logo features points, lines and planes.
