What’s a word mark?

A word mark is a logo made using type and the name of the brand. It doesn’t use any imagery or graphics; rather, it focuses on the typography and alters it to get the desired effect.

Based on this article from Looka.com on word marks, using a word mark is most likely to be the best choice for a logo if your brand has a short distinctive brand name, you plan to use your logo across many different mediums as its easier to integrate rather than a pictorial logo for example or you want to use bright colour or unique typeface in your logo.

Exercises:

The first exercise we did was using a potential font we want to use in our branding brief to write out the name of our brand and label each part of the type. I decided to do two, as I wanted to label all the elements mentioned to us during the lecture and what I found during my research.

I felt this was a very useful exercise as it familiarised me with elements of type that I previously had no clue about, and knowing these terms will help me define or explain what I want to change or what I like in a certain font or logo.

It also makes it easier to follow tips or advice or understand articles on typography, which is something that was an issue for me previously.

We also got set another task during this lecture, creating word marks by altering type to communicate words given to us.

I feel like this turned out quite successfully, and it definitely was a great way for me to experiment with all the ways i can adjust type in Figma and use tools to do so that I’ve never really explored previously.

I also thought it was very interesting to see my peer’s interpretation of the prompts as they varied a lot on some of the words and reminded me to really explore how I can present ideas in typography, as there are a lot of options.
